Wynyard Quarter is reclaimed land on the western edge of the city waterfront. The Auckland Harbour Board finished the last of the reclamation, including Wynyard Wharf, in 1930; the land carried the timber trade first and then bulk petrochemical storage, which gave it the name Tank Farm.1 Before that, the filling of Freemans Bay between 1873 and 1901 had already pushed the shore more than a kilometer northwest to where Viaduct Basin and Wynyard Quarter are now.2
The quarter opened to the public in August 2011, with Jellicoe Street, North Wharf, Silo Park and the Viaduct Events Centre, and a 1.5 km heritage tram loop started running on 6 August that year. Air New Zealand has its head office here, and ASB Bank built its headquarters at Jellicoe and Halsey streets; 486 people lived in the quarter at the 2023 census.1
Local tip: The Gaunt Street espresso bars are weekday-only; on a Sunday, Goodness Gracious on Pakenham Street West opens at 08:00.

Viaduct Harbour
Viaduct Harbour is named after a Harbour Board scheme from the early 1900s that was never finished; the half-built basin berthed fishing boats instead, and for most of the 20th century it was the center of Auckland's fishing industry. After New Zealand won the America's Cup in 1995, it was rebuilt for the team bases of the 2000 regatta and then turned into apartments, offices and restaurants.3
French Press is at 21 Viaduct Harbour Avenue and Lawn Café at 12. A drawbridge links Viaduct Harbour with Wynyard Quarter.3
Gaunt Street, Jellicoe Street and the office blocks
Atomic, the roaster that has worked from Kingsland since 1995, runs an espresso bar at 30 Gaunt Street.4 It opens 07:00–15:00 on weekdays, as does Cafe at Bayleys at the same address; both have outdoor tables. On Jellicoe Street, Rushworth Cafe is at 17 and The Store at 22.
Halsey Street has Mensa at 124 and Halsey Street Kitchen at 138, and The Pantry in the Park Hyatt at 99. Bowler is at 85 Daldy Street, and Wander at 8 Madden Street has outdoor seating. Goodness Gracious, at 117 Pakenham Street West, is a bakery café with outdoor tables, open 07:30–16:00 on weekdays, 08:00–16:00 on Saturdays and 08:00–15:00 on Sundays.
Westhaven and Beaumont Street
West of the quarter, Westhaven Marina has nearly 2,000 berths plus swing moorings and is usually fully booked. The Harbour Bridge approaches, built for the bridge's 1959 opening, took the old St Marys Bay foreshore next to it.5
On Beaumont Street, The Westhaven Cafe at 124 opens at 06:00 on weekdays and 07:00 on Saturdays, the earliest start on this part of the waterfront. Haodee Coffee Roasters, a specialty roaster, is at 155, and Urbanrise Bakery & Expresso is on the same street.
Weather and weekends on the waterfront
Outdoor tables are one reason to come here: Atomic, Cafe at Bayleys, Goodness Gracious and Wander all have them. Auckland averages highs of about 24 °C in January and February and about 15 °C in July, and July, May and June are the wettest months, January the driest.6
On weekends the office cafés on Gaunt Street close, so Goodness Gracious and The Westhaven Cafe, which opens on Saturdays, are the places to start.
