Auckland is built on an isthmus less than two kilometers wide at its narrowest point, dotted with 53 volcanic centers, and its Māori name, Tāmaki Makaurau, is usually translated as "Tāmaki desired by many".1 A flat white is a double espresso with about 130 ml of steamed milk under a thin layer of microfoam, and a long black is a double shot poured onto hot water, the reverse of an americano.23

Who poured the first flat white is still argued across the Tasman. Sydney holds the oldest written evidence: a May 1983 review of the café Miller's Treat mentions "flat white coffee", and Alan Preston says he put the name on the menu of Moors Espresso Bar in 1985.24 Wellington points to a "failed cappuccino" at Bar Bodega on Willis Street in 1989. Auckland's own claim belongs to Derek Townsend and Darrell Ahlers of Cafe DKD, who say they learned the name from a friend who had worked in Sydney cafés.25

The city's roasting trade grew out of carts and single shops. Michael Allpress started with one coffee cart at Victoria Park Market in 1989, and the company he founded now operates in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Singapore and the UK; Asahi Beverages agreed to buy it in 2021.67 Chris Priestley opened the first Atomic on Ponsonby Road in 1992 and added a roastery and café in Kingsland three years later.8

The national average was NZ$2.89 in June 2006 and NZ$4.79 in June 2024, and it reached NZ$5.23 in June 2026.1110 Over the year to January 2026 it rose by 32 cents, or 6.6%, the steepest annual increase since the year to March 2024.12
