Newmarket takes its name from a livestock market at the junction of Remuera Road, Great South Road and Manukau Road, known as the "new market" before the name spread to the whole district. Manukau Road became Broadway in late 1912, and Broadway is now the main street of one of New Zealand's most significant shopping and hospitality districts.1

Grafton lies between Newmarket and the center. Auckland City Hospital, the largest hospital in the country, and the University of Auckland's medical school, whose 1967 buildings are linked to the hospital by a tunnel, stand on its northern side.2 The two suburbs together rank second to the city center for cafés, and they stay open later than most: Newmarket has nearly as many late cafés as the center.

Local tip: Authentic Bakery & Cafe on Crowhurst Street opens at 05:30 on weekdays; at the other end of the day, Seasons on Khyber Pass Road serves coffee and dessert until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
