Mount Eden is a suburb about 4 km south of the center, named after George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland; 24,495 people lived there at the 2023 census.1 Above it rises Maungawhau, "mountain of the whau tree", a volcano that erupted from three craters 28,000 years ago. Its summit, at 196 meters, is the highest natural point on the Auckland isthmus, and the main crater is 50 meters deep.2
The shopping village sits on Mount Eden Road roughly between Valley Road and Grange Road. Trams linked the suburb to the city from around 1900 until the 1950s, and Mount Eden Prison was built in a castle style between 1882 and 1917.1 The village has the suburb's densest run of cafés, and Mount Eden is one of the few places outside the center where cafés stay open into the night.
Local tip: Climb Maungawhau early and come down for breakfast: Cotton Candy and Circus Circus on Mount Eden Road both open at 06:30, seven days a week.

Maungawhau station, the former Mount Eden station, closed on 11 July 2020 for City Rail Link works and reopened in 2026.3 Since the line opened on 13 September 2026, trains run straight through the city center instead of ending at Waitematā.4 Dominion Road, on the suburb's western side, is a major bus corridor carrying about 50,000 passengers a week.5
To reach the summit, walk: the road to the top has been closed to most vehicles since 2011, except for people with limited mobility, and boardwalks opened in 2020 protect the terraces and kūmara (sweet potato) storage pits on the upper slopes.2
The village cafés run from Cotton Candy at 418 Mount Eden Road, open daily 06:30–15:30, past Frasers at 434 and Chapter at 442, which has Wi-Fi and opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–16:00. Essential Deli is at 445B, Circus Circus at 447, The Hearth Eatery & Bar at 447A and Altar Cafe at 465, with Fairview Café at 471.
North of the village, Friend & Whau at 260 Mount Eden Road has outdoor tables and opens daily 08:00–16:00. South of it, Next Door is at 589 and Tupu'anga Coffee at 597. Eden Garden Cafe, at 24 Omana Avenue, opens daily 10:00–15:30.
Dominion Road was called Mt Roskill Road until 1907, when it was renamed to mark New Zealand becoming a Dominion. It runs 7.3 km from the northern part of Mount Eden to the Manukau Harbour, and many Asian restaurants line it between Valley Road and Kensington Avenue.5
Its Mount Eden stretch has Corner Coffee at 193, Vinyl coffee shop at 218, Bean & You Coffee Co at 297 and Coffee & Tea Specialists at 376. L'Espresso Cafe at 290, a bakery café, serves brunch from 06:30 on weekdays and closes on Sundays. Kōkako, the organic roaster, moved its roasting to Mount Eden after starting as a city coffee cart in 2001.6
Mount Eden keeps later hours than most of Auckland. Circus Circus on Mount Eden Road is open daily 06:30–22:00. Jelly House, a dessert and tea café, opens at noon and serves until 23:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Fukurou Patisserie opens Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30, until 21:00 from Friday to Sunday.
Weekends are easy here: most Mount Eden cafés open seven days, while L'Espresso Cafe and Essential Deli close on Sundays and Chapter on Mondays.

The summit of Maungawhau is 196 meters above sea level, the highest natural point on the Auckland isthmus, and its main crater is 50 meters deep. The volcano erupted about 28,000 years ago. The summit road has been closed to most vehicles since 2011, so most visitors walk up from Mount Eden village.
Maungawhau station, formerly Mount Eden station, reopened in 2026 after closing in July 2020 for City Rail Link works. Since 13 September 2026, trains from there run through the city center without stopping at Waitematā as a terminus. Dominion Road, on the western side of the suburb, is also a major bus route.
