Parnell is often billed as Auckland's oldest suburb because it dates from the start of European settlement: Robert Tod subdivided land here in 1841 and advertised it as the "Village of Parnell". Parnell Road, the main street, was first called Manukau Road, and Holy Trinity Cathedral stands at the top of the hill.1

East of Parnell Road the suburb drops to the harbor at Judges Bay, named for Judge William Martin, who arrived in 1841, and to the Parnell Baths, saltwater pools first opened in 1914. The Parnell Rose Gardens, created in 1913, hold a Festival of Roses every November.1 Cafés line Parnell Road and the parallel St Georges Bay Road, and two more sit inside the Auckland Domain on the suburb's western edge.

Local tip: On Sundays, when Casse Croute on Stanley Street is closed, Winona Forever on Parnell Road opens at 08:00 and Wintergarden Café in the Domain at 08:30.
