Ponsonby is an inner suburb about 2 km west of the center, laid out along a north–south ridge that Ponsonby Road follows; the Māori name for the ridge is Te Rimu Tahi. It was first subdivided in 1845 as Dedwood and renamed in 1873.1 The old name survives in Dedwood Deli at 106 Ponsonby Road. Pacific Islanders settled here in large numbers from the 1940s to the 1970s, until the Dawn Raids of 1973–1979 and rising rents pushed many out, and gentrification began in the 1970s.1

Freemans Bay lies below the ridge to the north. The bay itself was filled in between 1873 and 1901, moving the shoreline more than a kilometer out, and it was probably named after James Stuart Freeman, secretary to Governor Hobson. Early settlers called it Waipiro Bay, after the rum drunk there.2 Together they rank third for cafés in Auckland, after the city center and Newmarket.

Local tip: For an early Sunday coffee, Salta at 285 Ponsonby Road opens at 07:00, an hour before Pilar at the K Road end and Fusion on Jervois Road.

Along Ponsonby Road

Ponsonby Road runs from K Road north to Three Lamps, the junction with College Hill, St Marys Road and Jervois Road, named after a 19th-century lamp that stood there. A horse tram from Queen Street reached Ponsonby in 1884, and electric trams replaced it in 1902.1

The southern end, near K Road, has Pilar at 2A, Kesia at 44 and Bodega at 86. Midway are Egg And Spoon at 113, San Ray at 120 and Miann at 136; further north, Dizengoff at 256, Allpress at 266, Bambina at 268 and Hyde at 282, which has Wi-Fi. Salta at 285 opens at 06:30 on weekdays, and T art patisserie at 295 stays open until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Past Three Lamps, Fusion is at 32 Jervois Road.

Allpress, Atomic and the roasters

Allpress began in 1989 with a single coffee cart at Victoria Park Market.3 The market occupies the Destructor, a brick rubbish incinerator on Victoria Street West completed in 1905, with a 38-meter chimney; it burned the city's rubbish to generate electricity until 1972 and was converted for market use from 1983.42 Hēmi trades there today.

Atomic also started on this ridge: Chris Priestley opened it on Ponsonby Road in 1992 and served espresso to musicians and artists before opening a roastery in Kingsland.5 In 2015, The Good One at 42 Douglas Street was the Auckland headquarters of Coffee Supreme, the Wellington roaster.6 Eighthirty Coffee Roasters is at 4 Brown Street and Mowai Espresso Bar at 30B Pollen Street.

Freemans Bay, College Hill and Victoria Park

Most of the reclaimed flat became Victoria Park, set out in 1905 with sports grounds, a pavilion and a playground.2 Cafés sit on the streets above it: Let's Ketchup at 1 College Hill and Meebz Cafe at 26 College Hill, Queenies Lunchroom on Spring Street with outdoor tables, and Little Bird Kitchen at 1A Summer Street, a vegan café open daily 08:00–16:00.

At the southern end, where Ponsonby Road meets K Road, OPEN trades at 553 Karangahape Road. Rupa's Cafe is at 103 Wellington Street and Roost at 1 Vinegar Lane.

Opening hours on the strip

Most Ponsonby cafés open by 07:00 on weekdays and close mid-afternoon. Salta opens at 06:30 Monday to Friday and at 07:00 on Saturdays and Sundays; Pilar and Fusion both open 07:00–15:00 on weekdays and 08:00–15:00 at weekends. Salta, Pilar, Fusion, Little Bird Kitchen and T art patisserie all open on Sundays, unlike many cafés in the city center; T art closes on Mondays.
