Dakar's best-known coffee is sold on the street. Café Touba, robusta roasted with djar (grains of Selim) and cloves, is sold at tangana kiosks, plywood counters set up all over the capital, and in 2026 a paper cup cost 100 CFA francs.1 Vendors buy beans in bulk, mostly from Côte d'Ivoire, and the only branding on a stand is usually a photo of Sheikh Amadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride Sufi brotherhood.1

Sit-down cafés serve it too. Kéliba Café, near the Total station in Hann Maristes, pours a spiced, fair-trade café Touba and bakes cakes and tarts with millet or cassava flour.2 Its 2024 drinks menu priced a small café Touba at 1,000 CFA francs, the same as a small espresso.3 Nearby, close to Parc de Hann, the business once called curiositea changed hands in 2025 and now trades as Cadence Coffee.4

In the Mamelles, a district named after two volcanic hills between Ouakam and the Almadies, coffee comes with art. Loman Art House, a contemporary art gallery, keeps its café in the inner garden;5 the house is the idea of Loman Pawlitschek.6 Ban Café belongs to Ban Workshop, a pottery studio whose name is the Wolof word for clay,7 and serves brunch on Sundays only.8

How coffee works in Dakar

At a tangana, ask for café Touba and watch the pour: the vendor tips the coffee between cup and ladle, lifting it higher each time.1 Sugar is on the counter. In 2022 Le360 Afrique reported a cup at 50 CFA francs, with Ivorian beans ground at the Keur Massar market and spiced with poivre de Guinée (another name for djar).9

After a meal, the drink offered to friends and visitors is more often ataya, Chinese green tea boiled with sugar, and sometimes mint, over a charcoal stove.10 It comes in three rounds brewed from the same leaves, each sweeter and less bitter than the one before, and is poured back and forth between glass and pot until it foams; thicker foam counts as better.10

Café menus run on espresso. At Kéliba Café in 2024 a small cappuccino or café latte cost 1,500 CFA francs and a large one 2,000, and café Touba also came as a latte or over ice.3 Ban Café's current menu charges 1,500 CFA francs for a Nespresso or Americano and 2,000 for a latte.11

Prices are in West African CFA francs, pegged to the euro at 655.957 francs since 1999 and shared with seven other countries.12 Wave, a mobile-money app launched in Senegal in 2018, charges a flat 1% on transfers with free deposits and withdrawals, and pushed Orange Money to cut its rates.13 Dakar taxis almost never have meters, so agree the fare first; in 2022 the BCEAO put a taxi between the airport and the city at 25,000 CFA francs.14
