Since the 12th century, Mestni trg has been one of the centers of the medieval town; its houses were later rebuilt as Baroque palaces, the Town Hall among them.1 The square continues as Stari trg and then Gornji trg, which runs to the foot of Castle Hill, where a path climbs to the castle.1

In front of the Town Hall stands Francesco Robba's fountain, commissioned in 1743 and unveiled in 1751; the one on the square has been a replica since 2006, and the restored original went to the National Gallery in 2008.2 Cafés follow the line of the squares, from Pritličje and Robba on Mestni trg to Črno Zrno on Gornji trg.

Local tip: Shop the market before coffee: the stalls on Vodnikov trg close at 16:00 on Saturdays and all day Sunday, while Tri Marije's trailer sits right below the colonnade on Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje.1011
