Metelkova was built as a military headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian army and later served the Yugoslav People's Army in Slovenia. Its seven barracks have been occupied since September 1993 and run as an autonomous social and cultural center, with studios, NGO and LGBT offices, exhibitions and concerts.1

The Slovene Ethnographic Museum, founded in 1923, moved into a former army barracks on Metelkova ulica in 1997 and gained a new exhibition building in 2004; the conversion was designed by the Groleger Arhitekti studio.2 To the south, on Trubarjeva cesta, the Rog factory made bicycles until the 1990s; as Centre Rog it now has nine workshops, a library, a garden with raised beds, a terrace, a café and a bistro.3

Local tip: Kavarna SEM serves until 01:00 every night and until 03:00 on event nights, so it works as a last stop after an evening at Metelkova.4
