Krakovo is Ljubljana's oldest suburb, a former fishing village whose men sold their catch in the old town while the women grew vegetables on long, narrow plots behind the houses.1 Its lettuce earned it the German nickname Solatendorf (Salad Village), and growers from Krakovo and Trnovo pushed their produce to the Central Market on two-wheeled carts called cize.1

Plečnik's Trnovo Bridge, built in 1929–1932, crosses the Gradaščica between the two suburbs, with two rows of birch trees planted on the bridge and pyramids that echo the spires of Trnovo Church.2 It is one of the Plečnik works inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.3

Local tip: Mala Pražarna on Krakovski nasip closes at 15:00 on weekdays, so plan the roastery first and a late drink at Klub rečnih kapitanov, open until 00:00, afterward.5

Krakovski nasip and Eipprova ulica

Krakovski nasip and Eipprova ulica are protected as a cultural and historical monument.4 Mala Pražarna, at Krakovski nasip 10, is a micro-roastery for single-origin coffee; in October 2026 its 200-gram bags ran from €9.50 for a Brazilian to €24.00 for a Colombian from Finca MonteBlanco.5 The café opens 09:00–15:00 on weekdays and 10:00–16:00 at weekends. In 2024, Specialty Kava Slovenia described a cat-themed room with about six coffees on offer and free tastings on Mondays at 12:00.6

Makramé, at Eipprova ulica 19, has tables outside. Pr' starem' kovaču is on Uršičev štradon. One Krakovo family kept its garden from being paved over in 1980, and the city has since laid out a trail devoted to the local lettuce, now sold as Ljubljana iceberg lettuce.1

Špica and the Gruber canal

Špica takes its name from its pointed shape; it is where the tourist boats turn, quieter than the center but busy in warm months.4 Kavarnica Špica, on Gruberjevo nabrežje, stands on the site of a former city swimming pool, about ten minutes' walk from the center, with a terrace over the Ljubljanica.7

The Botanical Garden, along the Gruber canal, opened in 1810 under Franc Hladnik and is the oldest in Southeastern Europe, with more than 4,500 species and subspecies on two hectares.8 Its teahouse, Čajnica Primula, at Ižanska cesta 15, opens 09:00–19:00 every day.4

Prule and the Plečnik House

Prule is separated from Golovec and Castle Hill by Karlovška cesta; its name is linked to the German Brühl, a swampy meadow.4 Plečnik's own house, on Karunova ulica by the Trnovo church, is run by the city museums with a permanent exhibition; guided tours run every day except Monday, the last at 17:00.4

Klub rečnih kapitanov, at Opekarska cesta 1, is open 10:00–00:00 every day, with Wi-Fi and seats outside.

South toward the Ljubljana Marshes

Dolenjska cesta heads south past Bar 42 at No. 33a and Barjan at No. 43, which has outdoor tables and cakes. Kavarna Largo is on Barjanska cesta, and Pantano Caffe on Pot na Rakovo jelšo.

Plečnik's smallest church, St Michael's in the Barje (Ljubljana Marshes), is about 45 minutes away on foot; bus 19 from Trnovo to the Barje stop cuts that to a 10-minute walk.4
