Two of the Eixample's six barris share this page: Sagrada Família, built up around Gaudí's basilica, and Fort Pienc to the south.1 Fort Pienc is named for Fort Pius, a fortification that stood there until the 19th century.2 Work on the basilica began on 19 March 1882 under Francisco de Paula del Villar, and Gaudí took over the design in 1883.3
In 2026 the church reached its full height. The cross on the Tower of Jesus Christ was completed on 20 February, taking it to 172.5 m and making it the tallest church in the world.4 Pope Leo XIV blessed the tower on 10 June, the centenary of Gaudí's death, and about 5 million people visited in 2025.53 Most cafés sit on residential streets such as Marina, Lepant and Castillejos.
Local tip: For coffee before the basilica, El Sol on Carrer de Nàpols opens at 06:00 on weekdays, and La Eulàlia on Carrer de València serves specialty coffee from 09:00 every day.

Sagrada Família station serves two lines: the L2 platforms are under Carrer de la Marina between Mallorca and Provença, and the L5 platforms under Provença between Sardenya and Marina.6 For Fort Pienc, Arc de Triomf on L1 is also a Rodalies station, and Tetuan and Monumental are on L2.2
Sitting outside costs more near the church: for 2024 the city's fee for a single terrace table near the Sagrada Família was about €475.7 Two of the specialty bars are on Carrer de Lepant, where The Miners Speciality Coffee is at number 275 and Merle Speciality Coffee at 338. La Eulàlia, at Carrer de València 437, combines specialty coffee with brunch, weekdays 09:00–19:30 and weekends until 16:00.
Three Marks Coffee opens at 08:30 on weekdays and has outdoor tables. FOOD o'clock, at Lepant 358, bakes and serves brunch from Tuesday to Sunday. Wi-Fi is easy to find: Antarados on Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret, Katane' on Carrer de Mallorca and Bar Linense on Carrer de Cartagena all offer it.
Fort Pienc is the area of the Estació del Nord, the city's main coach station, and of two big cultural venues, L'Auditori concert hall and the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya.2
Xurreria J. Argilés, at Carrer de la Marina 107, opened in 1958 where the Marina bridge begins; its first customers were factory workers from Poblenou, and Time Out calls it probably the oldest street churro stand in the city. Today its early-morning queue is mostly night owls, and besides churros it fries salchichuchos, xuixos (filled fried pastries) stuffed with frankfurters.8 It opens Tuesday to Friday 08:30–21:30 and runs 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday.
El Sol, at Carrer de Nàpols 125, opens at 06:00 on weekdays, as does L'Obrador on Carrer de Cartagena every day, until 22:00. Trigo on Carrer de la Marina follows at 06:30. Cal Manel, at Carrer de Nàpols 103, opens at 06:30 on weekdays and serves until 01:30 every night, and Giulietta Cafè stays open until midnight from Tuesday to Sunday.
For bread with your coffee, La Boulangerie at Carrer de Còrsega 551 opens at 07:00 on weekdays, and Fleca del Metro is at Carrer de Cartagena 293. Xocolateria Carrió is on Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret.
