Bars across Spain still serve torrefacto, coffee roasted with sugar added near the end so that it caramelizes into a glossy black film. Royal Decree 1676/2012 allows up to 15 kg of sugar per 100 kg of green coffee. The coating slows staling and masks defects in the beans; bars rarely use it pure and mostly blend it with natural roast at ratios such as 80/20 or 50/50.1

The method reached Spain through José Gómez Tejedor, an industrialist from Extremadura who learned it in the Caribbean in the 1890s and held a patent on it from 1901 to 1921.1 A cafè d'especialitat (specialty coffee bar) starts from the other end: at Right Side Coffee Bar in the Call, Time Out found beans bought from named farms, roasted weekly in Barcelona and described on a card at the table with tasting notes.2

Local tip: At Right Side Coffee Bar in the Call, ask for the card: the coffees rotate, and each one is listed with its tasting notes.2

From Satan's Coffee Corner to Right Side

Marcos Bartolomé, who grew up in a La Rioja family of coffee makers, started Satan's Coffee Corner in the shop window of a Raval stationer's, moved it to a bike shop and then to Carrer de l'Arc de Sant Ramon del Call. By 2019 it poured rotating blends from Right Side Coffee.3 Barcelona Urbana dates the opening to 2012, which puts it among the first specialty bars in the city.4

Satan's closed in 2023, and Right Side, a roaster from Castelldefels that had been one of its main suppliers, took over the room.2 The house rules hang on the wall: no syrups, no decaf, no alternative milks and no Wi-Fi.4

Roasters and espresso bars by neighborhood

Poblenou has the most specialty bars, ahead of Gràcia. The Poblenou ones are scattered through the old factory grid: Poblenou Roasting Company at Carrer de Pere IV 101, Café de Finca at Carrer de Zamora 96, Abyss Coffee Roasters at Avinguda Diagonal 93 and Julia, a bakery with specialty coffee at Carrer de Ramon Turró 85, closed on Mondays.

Gràcia's range from chromatic café on Carrer de les Carolines to Salvatge on Carrer del Penedès. Farther out, Kruda at Carrer de Berlín 103 in Les Corts opens at 07:45 on weekdays, Aeroplano is at Carrer de Muntaner 423 and KFika at Via Augusta 125 in Sant Gervasi, and La Galena Specialty Coffee faces Plaça del Sortidor in Poble-sec.

Names that repeat across the city

Some roasters run several bars. Nømad works in three formats, according to Barcelona Urbana: the coffee bar in Passatge de Sert, Frutas Selectas on Carrer de Pujades and Petit Nomad in the Eixample.4

Syra Coffee shows how far the model can stretch.4 It began in 2015 as a micro-roaster in Gràcia and now has more than 40 sites across Spain, which makes it a chain rather than a neighborhood bar.4

What a cortado or a V60 costs

As of March 2026, Barcelona Urbana priced an espresso or cortado at a specialty bar at €2.00–2.80, a flat white at €3.50–4.50, a V60 pour-over at €4.00–5.50 and a batch brew at €3.00–4.00.4 Many of these bars keep short days: SKYE Coffee on Carrer de Pamplona closes at 13:30 on Monday and Tuesday and opens on weekdays only, while Ripa Coffee on Carrer del Consell de Cent serves until 20:30 on Sunday.

The city's coffee festival, the MY Coffee Awards, runs from 6 to 8 November 2026 at La Nau Bostik, Carrer de Ferran Turné 1-11. Tickets start at €11, and a three-round barista competition decides the title of Best Barista in Barcelona.5
