Barcelona's oldest cafés started out selling milk. Granja Viader, on Carrer d'en Xuclà in the Raval, opened as a vaqueria (dairy) in 1870, became the first dairy in the city to keep no cows on its premises, and is where Cacaolat, the bottled cocoa milk, was invented.1 Granjas like it still serve the suís, a cup of hot chocolate under a cap of whipped cream, which Granja Dulcinea has poured on Carrer de Petritxol since 1941.2

The grand café rooms are on La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya. Cafè de l'Òpera began as an 18th-century coaching inn, sold hot chocolate to audiences from the Liceu opera house in the 19th century and became a Modernista café in 1929.3 Café Zurich, on the corner of Carrer de Pelai, has been a meeting point since 1920 and stayed open through the Civil War.4

Two local roasters bracket the specialty scene. Cafés El Magnífico, a family firm on Carrer de l'Argenteria, began buying traceable coffees from named origins in 1987; Nomad, started by the twice Spanish barista champion Jordi Mestre, opened its first bar in 2014 and roasts in Poblenou.56 In 2024 Mestre told Time Out that specialty coffee had far more customers than six or seven years earlier.7

Ordering at a Barcelona bar

Coffee here is espresso-based. A cafè sol is a plain espresso, a tallat is coffee with a little milk (a cortado in Madrid), and a cafè amb llet is equal parts coffee and milk.89 Ask for a cafè amb gel in summer: a hot coffee arrives with a separate glass of ice, and you sweeten it before pouring it over.9 A bombó is espresso over condensed milk, served in a clear glass so the two layers show.10

A cigaló, carajillo in Spanish, is coffee with brandy or cognac; with milk added it becomes a trifàsic. Nobody is sure where the word comes from, and one theory credits the dockworkers of Barcelona's port.11 Many traditional bars brew torrefacto beans, which taste more bitter, so a specialty café is the place to go if that bothers you. Fresh decaf is uncommon, and a descafeinat often comes as a sachet of instant.9

Where you sit can change the bill. The consumer group OCU's advice in Catalonia is that a terrace supplement may be charged only if the menu states it clearly, and a minimum spend or time limit only if you are told when you sit down.12 In May 2025 a Barceloneta bar charged €1.60 for a café con leche, €2.50 once a customer had been on its terrace for 30 minutes and €4 after an hour.13

Nobody expects a tip for a coffee; if you ate at the bar, leave a few coins or round up to the next euro.14 Cards are the norm: in the Ajuntament's 2025 survey of bars and restaurants, only one customer in five paid cash. The same survey found that 54% of staff spoke Catalan and 78.6% understood it, so bon dia (good morning) and si us plau (please) go a long way.15

FAQ

Cafés in Barcelona: common questions

How much does a coffee cost in Barcelona?

An espresso in Barcelona bars and restaurants cost €1.40 on average in the Ajuntament's 2025 survey. A café con leche costs about €1.50–1.60 at a neighborhood bar, €2.50–2.70 at the specialty cafés on Carrer de Pujades (2024), and a cappuccino or flat white at newer design-led cafés €4.50–5 (2026).

Which neighborhood of Barcelona has the most cafés?

Eixample Dreta and Sagrada Família & Fort Pienc have the most cafés, followed by Eixample Esquerra. In the Eixample Dreta the cafés line Carrer de Bailèn and Carrer de la Diputació; in Sagrada Família they run along Carrer de la Marina and Carrer de Lepant, a few blocks from the basilica. The oldest granjas and roasters are in the Barri Gòtic and El Born.

What is a tallat in Barcelona?

A tallat is coffee with a little milk, the Catalan name for what Madrid calls a cortado. A cafè sol is a plain espresso, a cafè amb llet is equal parts coffee and milk, and a bombó is espresso over condensed milk in a clear glass. A cigaló, or carajillo, adds brandy or cognac.

What is a granja in Barcelona?

A granja is a café that grew out of a city dairy and now serves hot chocolate, cream and pastries. Granja Viader on Carrer d'en Xuclà opened as a dairy in 1870 and invented Cacaolat. The signature order is a suís, hot chocolate under whipped cream, which Granja Dulcinea has served on Carrer de Petritxol since 1941.

Can Barcelona cafés charge more for a terrace table?

Only if they say so. The consumer group OCU advises that a terrace supplement in Catalonia must be clearly stated on the menu, and a minimum spend or time limit must be explained when you sit down. In May 2025 a Barceloneta bar raised a €1.60 café con leche to €2.50 after 30 minutes on its terrace.

Do you tip in cafés in Barcelona?

Not for a coffee. If you ate at the bar, a few coins or rounding up to the next euro is enough. Most people pay by card: in the Ajuntament's 2025 survey, only one customer in five in Barcelona bars and restaurants paid cash, and 54% of staff spoke Catalan.
