Benimaclet was a village before it was a district. Its name comes from the Arabic banī Makhlad, "sons of Makhlad", from its past as an alquería (Muslim farmstead); it governed itself until 1878, when it became part of Valencia, and it was made a district in 1972.1 The old core keeps narrow pedestrian streets around the square of the Church of the Assumption.1

The Universitat de València and the Universitat Politècnica are close by, which has brought a large student population to a district of about 28,000 residents (2022).1 On its edges the huerta, Valencia’s irrigated farmland, is gradually giving way to the Ronda Nord ring road and new building.1

Local tip: Ride metro line 9 from Benimaclet to Alboraia-Peris Aragó for horchata, then come back for a late coffee at La senzilla on Carrer de la Murta, open until 01:00.

Two barris and an unfinished plan

District 14 has two barris, Benimaclet itself and Camí de Vera.1 A development plan (PAI) for the open ground on the edge would join the district more closely to the huerta and restore historic streets, but it has not yet been approved.1

Horchata in Alboraia, next door

Alboraia, the next town north, is about 6 km from the center of Valencia and is known as the cradle of horchata: some 180 ha of its land grow xufa (tiger nut), and making horchata is its most widespread local industry.3 The Avinguda de la Horchata is the main road into town.3 Horchatería Daniel opened on it in 1979, before the road took that name.4

Two underground metro stations serve Alboraia, Alboraia-Peris Aragó and Alboraia-Palmaret.3 At the mouth of the Carraixet ravine stands the Ermita dels Peixets, built in 1907 to commemorate the local Miracle of the Fish.3
