Valencia’s Eixample (Ensanche in Spanish) is the grid laid out beyond the old town once its walls were gone. The plan finally approved in 1887 was drawn up by José Calvo, Joaquín María Arnau and Luis Ferreres, and its axis is the Gran Via del Marqués del Túria, lined with modernista buildings on blocks about 100 m square.1
The district has three barris, Ruzafa, El Pla del Remei and Gran Via, and about 42,700 residents in 2022.1 El Pla del Remei and Gran Via run from the Mercado de Colón to the Turia garden, and their cafés range from stalls inside the market to specialty bars on Carrer de Císcar and Carrer de Sorní.
Local tip: Pair the Mercado de Colón with the Turia garden: the market is a short walk from Colón metro station, and Kiosco Bar Río Turia in the riverbed opens at 10:15 from Friday to Sunday.

Francisco Mora Berenguer designed the market, built between 1914 and 1916 and opened on 24 December 1916. It is counted among the best examples of early-20th-century Valencian modernisme and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2007.2 Its restoration won a gold medal from the American Institute of Architects at the Miami Biennial in December 2003, and four basement levels were dug beneath it, the first lit by a skylight and kept free for cultural events.2
Only a delicatessen, a fishmonger and a greengrocer remain from the old trades; they share the hall with a horchatería, cafés, beer bars and a restaurant.2 Horchatería Daniel of Alboraia opened its first branch outside the town here in 2013.3 Casa Orxata (orxata is Valencian for horchata) and Pantalán 5 both trade at the market’s address, Carrer de Jorge Juan 19, and Colón metro station, on lines 3, 5, 7 and 9, is close by.4
CATÉ Specialty Coffee & Tea Shop is on Carrer de Císcar and Gigi World Coffee Specialty on Carrer del Mestre Racional. East Crema Coffee’s branch on Carrer de Sorní opens 08:00–20:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 at weekends, and Syra Coffee’s branch on the Gran Via del Marqués del Túria opens daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
Copper Coffee, on Carrer de Borriana, keeps split weekday hours, 09:30–14:00 and 17:00–20:30. hac!, on Carrer del Comte d’Altea, allows pets and opens Wednesday to Sunday, until 18:00 at weekends. Esperanza, a café literario (literary café), is on Carrer de Joaquim Costa.
The Turia used to flow past the district’s northern edge. After the flood of 14 October 1957, which killed about a hundred people, the Plan Sur diverted the river south of the city; work began in 1958 and was finished in 1972.5 The dry bed became a park in 1986, and it now runs for about 8.5 km and covers some 136 ha.5
Kiosco Bar Río Turia, a kiosk in the riverbed park with vegan options, opens at 11:00 from Monday to Thursday and at 10:15 from Friday to Sunday, closing at 19:00, or 18:00 on Sundays.
