Extramurs (Extramuros in Spanish), "outside the walls", is district 3: the ground west of the old town, whose 14th-century wall followed today’s Carrer de Guillem de Castro.12 Its four barris are El Botànic, La Roqueta, La Petxina and Arrancapins, with about 48,500 residents in 2022.1
The streets around the Gran Via de Ferran el Catòlic are less regular than the Eixample’s grid, which earned the area the nickname ensanche pobre, the poor man’s extension.1 For coffee, Extramurs mixes bakeries, neighborhood bars, a 24-hour café and several specialty bars, one of them inside a municipal market.
Local tip: LSD 24H on Gran Via de Ferran el Catòlic is the one café here that never closes; for a first coffee at dawn, Liaopastel on Avinguda de Pérez Galdós opens at 06:00.
