Ciutat Vella is Valencia’s old town: 1.69 km² inside the line of the 14th-century wall, closed to the north by the old bed of the Turia.1 Its six barris are La Seu around the cathedral, La Xerea, El Carmen, El Pilar, El Mercat and Sant Francesc, and it holds the cathedral, the Llotja de la Seda (silk exchange), the Mercado Central and the Plaza Redonda.1

For coffee the district divides in two. Around Plaza de la Virgen and Plaza de la Reina are the terraces, the horchaterías and the cafés that stay open past midnight; around the Mercado Central are market stalls, a news kiosk and specialty counters.

Local tip: Reach Plaza de la Virgen before 12:00 on a Thursday to see the Water Court sit at the cathedral’s Apostles’ Door, then walk to Plaça de Santa Caterina for horchata.

Plaza de la Virgen and the Water Court

Plaza de la Virgen stands on the Roman forum, where the cardo and the decumanus, the two main streets, crossed. The cathedral closes it to the south, the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados to the east and the gardens of the Palau de la Generalitat to the west.3 Its bronze fountain by Manuel Silvestre Montesinos, unveiled in 1976, shows the Turia surrounded by eight women for the eight main irrigation channels.3

Those channels still have their own court. The Tribunal de las Aguas (Water Court) meets every Thursday at 12:00 at the cathedral’s Apostles’ Door, or on Wednesday if Thursday is a holiday; hearings are oral, in Valencian, and its rulings cannot be appealed. UNESCO listed it as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.4

Cafés on the cathedral squares

Cafetería la Virgen and La Catedral face the square itself, at Plaça de la Mare de Déu 1 and 2. On Carrer del Comte d’Almodòvar, Café de las Horas has served coffee, tea and cocktails since 1994 in what were the stables of an 1850 building.5 It is open until 01:30, and until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; its menu lists a café con leche at €3 as of 2026.5

Cappuccino Valencia has tables outside on Plaza de la Reina, and Cafe Madrid is on Carrer de l’Abadia de Sant Martí.

Horchata and buñuelos in the old town

Horchatería de Santa Catalina, at Plaça de Santa Caterina 6, claims two centuries in the trade. Its two floors are decorated with Manises ceramics, and it opens daily from 08:15 to 21:30.6 Horchatería Daniel’s branch on Carrer de la Mar opens daily from 10:00 to 22:00.7

On Carrer d’Ercilla, by Plaça del Doctor Collado, El Collado has served thick chocolate and buñuelos since 1892; during Fallas a long queue forms at its door.7

Coffee at the Mercado Central

The Mercado Central, begun in 1914 and finished in 1928, is one of the landmarks of Valencian modernisme: 6,800 m² with more than 200 stalls, facing the Llotja de la Seda.2 Retrogusto Coffeemates, at stalls 169 and 170, rotates seasonal specialty coffees and runs cuppings; one of its cold brews is infused with orange peel and cardamom.8

News & Coffee, a kiosk on Plaça del Doctor Collado near the market, sells specialty coffee alongside magazines and zines, and opens at 08:00 on weekdays.8 Uncafé Mercat is on Carrer d’En Gall.

Specialty bars and early openers

Specialty bars are spread across the barris. Brewtalist Coffee Hub is on Carrer Baldoví, FAV coffe on Carrer del Cronista Carreres (weekdays 08:00–20:00), Q7th Specialty Coffee on Carrer de Quart and Vuka on Carrer dels Juristes. Chantilly Valencia, on Avinguda de l’Oest, opens daily from 09:00 to 16:00. For an earlier cup, Coffee Room on Carrer de Guillem de Castro and Un café on Plaça de Lope de Vega open at 07:30 on weekdays.
