Open late cafés in Chiang Mai
Open until 22:00 or later, which in Chiang Mai is the exception.

Chiang Mai's cafés are mostly a daytime business. More than half close by 18:00, and even Ristr8to, the city's best-known espresso bar, shuts at 20:08. Staying open until 22:00 or later, even on one day of the week, sets a café apart here.
Evening life here follows its nightlife zones, around Tha Phae Gate, along Loi Kroh Road and on Charoen Rat Road across the river, plus the student crowd in Nimman.1 Many of the late openers are dessert, milk and drink bars rather than coffee bars, so don't count on an espresso at 23:00.
Local tip: If you want coffee rather than dessert after 22:00, aim for Batch: Baked & Brew on Loi Kroh Road or Yesterday on Nimmanhaemin Road, both open until midnight; most other late openers are sweet shops or drink bars.
Where these cafés are: Nimman (21), Old City (12), Santitham (8), Suthep & CMU (5), Tha Phae & Night Bazaar (2), Riverside & Wat Ket (2).

Nimman after dark
Nimman has about four in ten of the city's late cafés, more than any other area. Its evenings draw younger Thais from the nearby university, and its pubs sit somewhere between bar, restaurant and club, with live bands often made up of students.1 The One Nimman shopping center at the corner of Soi 1 keeps its doors open until 23:00.1
For coffee late, Yesterday at 24 Nimmanhaemin Road runs 07:00–00:00, Annista Cafe 08:00–00:00, Marble Arch 09:00–00:00 and Posrest 10:00–00:00. Shewitkhontammada Coffee House, which also bakes, closes at 23:15. Some places only open at night: Coffee Munao from 17:00 and Timely Cafe from 17:30, both until midnight, and Home Sit on weekdays from 18:00.
The Old City and Loi Kroh Road
Loi Kroh Road (ถนนลอยเคราะห์), east of the moat, is the center of the city's tourist nightlife.1 Batch: Baked & Brew, at 15/7 Loi Kroh Road, opens at 07:00 and stays open until midnight, one of the longest days of any café in the city.
Inside the moat, Haiya Ta-bur Experience Space runs until 00:00 except on Wednesdays, De Cassowary and Kalapela Tea House until 23:00, and Gravity Cafe & Bistro until 22:00. Farango Cafe & Restaurant, at 93/4 Wua Lai Road, stays open until 23:00 on Saturdays only, the night of the Wua Lai walking street.
Night markets as the alternative
When the cafés close, the markets take over. The night bazaar on Chang Khlan Road trades 18:00–24:00, and the Kalare food center opposite it, open 17:00–22:00, runs on prepaid coupons and stages free Thai classical dance every night.1
West of town, the food carts by the university on Suthep Road set up around 17:00 and serve until about 22:00.1 Handicrafts are the night bazaar's specialty, so it suits a browse with a takeaway drink better than a sit-down coffee.2
Dessert and drink bars
In Santitham, Bannom, Ice Manias and WEDRINK serve until midnight; near the university, D-Milk is open until 23:00 and Kanom-Mae and Ice Skate's Crepe until 22:00. In the Old City, Ting Ting's Thai name promises bingsu with ginger syrup, bingsu being a Korean milk-based shaved-ice dessert, and it is open 11:00–22:00.3 The dessert has a Thai following: the After You chain serves it in local flavors and is very popular with young people in Bangkok.4
Across the Ping, L'Opéra French Bakery and Yuzu House Central Chiangmai both close at 22:00, a short walk or ride from the live-music restaurants on Charoen Rat Road.1
