Al Quoz is the long rectangle of warehouses and housing between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, west of Business Bay and north of Al Barsha.1 It began as a small settlement around a pond used by Bedouin travelers, and in the 1970s and 1980s the government set it aside for industry: factories, storage yards and workers' housing.1 Al Quoz 1, 2 and 4 are mainly residential, while Al Quoz 3 and the four numbered industrial zones hold most of the warehouses.1

Those warehouses are why Dubai's roasters are here. RAW Coffee Company, founded by Kim Thompson in 2007 and now run with Matt Toogood, roasts specialty coffee at its Al Quoz warehouse.6 No other part of Dubai has as many specialty cafés, from Nightjar Coffee Roasters on Alserkal Street to Cypher Urban Roastery and ROR Coffee Roastery in Industrial Area 3. Art galleries began moving into the same sheds in 2008.2

Local tip: Take the Red Line to Onpassive and catch bus 110 from the Al Safa terminus, which runs every 12 minutes, instead of walking 30 minutes to Alserkal Avenue in the heat.
