Jumeirah is the low-rise coast southwest of the old city, split into Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3 and built mostly as detached villas and townhouses; about 47,300 people lived there in 2024.1 Around 1900 it was a village of some 45 palm-leaf huts, home to fishermen, pearl divers and traders, and from 1960 it became the main district for Western expatriate housing.1 Satwa lies inland, bordered by Jumeirah and Bur Dubai.5

Two parallel roads carry most of the coffee. Jumeira Street, near the beach, has the most café addresses here, ahead of Al Wasl Road a few blocks inland, and several cafés on and between them give a villa number as their address. Comptoir 102, a concept store and plant-based café on Jumeirah Beach Road, occupies a converted 1970s villa.8 What's On's May 2025 café crawl along Al Wasl Road alone ran to 18 stops.7

Local tip: Book a Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding tour to see inside Jumeirah Mosque, dress modestly (women need a headscarf), then head south down Jumeira Street to Mikel Coffee Company's villa at number 284.

Jumeirah Mosque, Union House and 2nd December Street

Jumeirah Mosque, begun in 1975 and opened in 1979, is built of sandstone with two minarets and a dome, in a style drawn mainly from Fatimid and Mamluk architecture.2 Non-Muslims can go inside only on tours run by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, which ask for modest dress and a headscarf for women and do not run during prayer times; the visitors' entrance is on Jumeirah Street.2

Further north, the Etihad Museum at 1 Jumeira Road takes in Union House, where the UAE's founding declaration was signed on 2 December 1971. Its building, by Moriyama & Teshima, is shaped like a manuscript, with seven columns that recall the signing pens.3 Al Diyafa Street, the 2.5 km road from Union House to the World Trade Centre roundabout, was renamed 2nd December Street for the 40th National Day.4 W11 Cafe & Lounge faces the museum there, and Vanilla is on the same road.

Satwa: murals, tailors and round-the-clock coffee

Satwa was once dominated by the Bloushi tribe and Iranian families. Its roughly 40,000 residents now include Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino and Arab communities, and Filipinos call it "mini-Manila".5 2nd December Street and Al Satwa Road are its busiest, lined with cafés, restaurants, tailors and electronics shops. In 2016 sixteen artists painted murals around the Satwa roundabout for the Dubai Street Museum, themed on UAE history and the 1971 union.5
