Avenida Paulista opened on 8 December 1891, laid out by the Uruguayan-born engineer Joaquim Eugênio de Lima, and runs 2.8 km from northwest to southeast.1 Coffee barons and industrial families such as the Matarazzos first lined it with ornate mansions. Offices, malls and museums took their place, from the Conjunto Nacional to MASP, the art museum Queen Elizabeth II dedicated in 1968.1

The avenue runs through Bela Vista, a 2.6 km² district whose best-known corner, Bixiga, grew with Italian immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.2 Bixiga is known for its cantinas and theaters, and for the festival of Nossa Senhora Achiropita, started by Calabrian immigrants and held every August on Rua Treze de Maio.2 Along the Saracura stream, the Quilombo Saracura was a Black community with 19th-century roots, and the samba school Vai-Vai was founded here in 1930.2

Local tip: On a Sunday, walk the car-free avenue between 09:00 and 16:00 and stop at Casa das Rosas, whose Ristoro opens at 10:00 that day; Café Crio and Parahy are closed at weekends.
