Jardins is the everyday name for a group of garden neighborhoods: Jardim América, Jardim Europa, Jardim Paulista and Jardim Paulistano.1 Jardim América came first. The City of São Paulo Improvements and Freehold Land Company, known as Companhia City, commissioned a plan from the British urbanists Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin in 1915, and Parker reworked it on the spot between 1917 and 1919.1 It is regarded as São Paulo's first bairro-jardim (garden neighborhood), with curving streets, setbacks and low density, unlike the grids then usual in the city.1

In 1986 the state heritage council CONDEPHAAT listed all four Jardins, protecting their street plan, tree cover, lots and building volumes.1 The shops are on the streets around Rua Oscar Freire, 2,600 m long and named in 1924 after Oscar Freire de Carvalho, a forensic doctor from Bahia.2 Rankings have long counted it among the world's most expensive shopping streets, and its side streets Haddock Lobo, Alameda Lorena, Bela Cintra and Melo Alves once held boutiques of Dior, Louis Vuitton and Cartier.2

Local tip: Take Line 4 to Oscar Freire station and walk the length of Alameda Lorena; Paradis Macarons on Rua Haddock Lobo is the late option, open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
