Higienópolis was laid out on land bought in 1893 by two German businessmen, Victor Nothmann and Martinho Burchard. The name means city of hygiene, after a hotel praised for its cleanliness and climate.1 The coffee aristocracy moved in first and built French-style mansions; administratively the neighborhood is part of the Consolação district.1

Apartment buildings followed, several of them landmarks of Brazilian modern architecture: Rino Levi's Edifício Prudência (1944), with gardens by Burle Marx, the Edifício Louveira (1946) by Vilanova Artigas and Carlos Cascaldi, and João Artacho Jurado's Edifício Bretagne (1959).1 Between 20% and 40% of the city's Jewish population lives here, and Parque Buenos Aires opened in 1913.1

Local tip: On a Sunday, when the Minhocão is closed to cars, walk the elevated road and then stop at Takkø Café on Rua Major Sertório, open daily from 09:00.

Getting to Higienópolis and Santa Cecília

Higienópolis–Mackenzie station, on Metro Line 4 (Yellow), sits between República and Paulista.2 The Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, which gave it its name, grew out of the Colégio Mackenzie, built in 1874 in neighboring Vila Buarque; the FAAP foundation is also in the neighborhood.1 Santa Cecília has two stations of its own, Santa Cecília and Marechal Deodoro, both on Line 3 (Red).3

Santa Cecília and the Minhocão

Santa Cecília is a 3.9 km² district with 80,972 residents in 2022, one of the densest in the city. It turned from farmland into a residential area for the coffee elite in the late 19th century, and its Igreja de Santa Cecília, built between 1885 and 1901, holds paintings by Benedito Calixto and Oscar Pereira da Silva.3 The Theatro São Pedro, in the same district, opened in 1917.3

The Elevado Presidente João Goulart, a 3.4 km elevated highway, opened on 24 January 1971 and passes over Santa Cecília along Rua Amaral Gurgel and Avenida São João.4 It is popularly known as the Minhocão (big earthworm), a nickname it got early for its long, winding shape.4

Cars use it Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 20:00. At night, at weekends and on public holidays it is closed to traffic and open to walkers and cyclists, and Law 16.833 of February 2018 created the Parque Municipal do Minhocão.4

Cafés from Rua Itacolomi to Rua Major Sertório

Rua Itacolomi has two cafés a few doors apart: Fabrique Pão e Café at number 612, with outdoor tables, Wi-Fi and step-free access, and Dulca at 639. Café Mania is at Rua Itambé 407 and Cafeteria Porto on Alameda Ribeiro da Silva.

On Rua Major Sertório, O Bibelô (295) has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables, and Takkø Café (553) opens daily 09:00–18:00. Takkø was started by Rodolfo Herrera, Flávio Seixlack and Rogério Tarantino, and in 2017 Sprudge praised the cortado made with Wolff Café beans at its Rua Fidalga shop in Vila Madalena.5

Bio Barista Cafés Especiais, on Rua Helvétia, serves specialty coffee and brunch 08:00–18:00 on weekdays only. Café Colombiano, on Alameda Eduardo Prado, opens 10:00–20:00 Monday to Saturday, the latest close in these two neighborhoods.
