Vila Mariana is a district of the south zone with 127,286 residents in the 2022 census.1 Its name is usually credited to the educator Carlos Eduardo de Paula Petit, who joined the names of his mother, Ana, and his wife, Maria; the area had been called Colônia dos Italianos or Cruz das Almas.1 A tram line arrived in 1886 and the municipal slaughterhouse in 1887, and the district was created in 1896.1
Saúde, next door, takes its name from the parish of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, founded in 1917.2 In the 18th century the area was a stop for tropeiros (mule drivers) between the coast and the interior, and a Japanese community settled there in larger numbers after the Second World War.2
Local tip: Astronauta Café on Rua Rio Grande opens only Thursday to Sunday; early in the week, Clemente Café on Rua Coronel Lisboa opens at 09:30 and has tables outside.
