Vila Madalena grew in the early 1900s on subdivided land of the old Sítio do Rio Verde, and many of its first residents were Portuguese immigrants.1 The story of a Portuguese landowner who split his land among three daughters, Madalena, Beatriz and Ida, has no documentary support.1 Administratively it sits in the Pinheiros district, in the west zone.1

From the late 1960s, students of the University of São Paulo rented houses here for the low rents and the short trip to campus, and more came after the military raid on the CRUSP student residences in 1968.1 Residents and artists held the first Feira da Vila Madalena on Rua Fradique Coutinho on 10 February 1980.1

Local tip: Ride Line 2 to its last stop, Vila Madalena, walk to Beco do Batman, and take a coffee at Pão on Rua Mourato Coelho, open daily from 08:00.

Beco do Batman and the streets around it

Beco do Batman is the graffiti alley bounded by Rua Gonçalo Afonso, Rua Medeiros de Albuquerque, Rua Harmonia and Rua Aspicuelta. Artists began painting its walls in the 1980s; the usual story is that a single Batman drawing drew the others.1 Local art students filled the walls with psychedelic and cubist-influenced designs, and neighbors keep repainting them.4 Vila Madalena drew thousands of visitors during the 2014 World Cup, and reported robberies around the alley rose in 2013–2014, so keep phones out of sight.4

In 2017, Isso é Café had its second São Paulo shop on Travessa Alonso, by the alley, sharing space with a coworking office and home to Brazil's first Modbar espresso machine.5

Sprudge's 2017 walk took in six specialty shops over about 1.1 miles here, among them Takkø Café on Rua Fidalga, set at the front of an art gallery, Nano Cafés Especiais, which began as a coffee-and-pastry truck, and Cupping Café on Rua Wisard, in a house its architect owner redesigned.5
