Siem Reap is Cambodia's second-largest city, with 245,494 people at the 2019 census, and the gateway town for Angkor.1 Angkor Wat lies about 6 km to the north, and visitors may enter the park from 05:00.23
The town has been rebuilt around that traffic. Visitor numbers went from negligible in the mid-1990s to more than two million by 2012, and in late 2020 work began on a US$150 million program of 38 roads, along with an upgrade of about 9 km of the Siem Reap River.14 In October 2023 a new airport, Siem Reap–Angkor International, opened about 50 km out of town.5
Cafés line both banks of the river, and in 2022 Time Out picked Wat Bo, on the east side, as Asia's coolest neighborhood.6 Specialty roasting has followed. The Bean Embassy on Chocolate Road, off Sala Kamreuk market, roasts its own beans, and two of its baristas have each won Cambodia's National Barista Championship.7
Siem Reap's neighborhoods still go by village names. Wat Bo and Wat Damnak are villages of Sala Kamreuk, east of the river, while Ta Phul and the Mondol villages around the center belong to Svay Dangkum, and Sla Kram covers the north.18

Cambodian iced coffee, kaafee tœ̆k kɑɑk (កាហ្វេទឹកកក), usually comes with sweetened condensed milk rather than black, and it is sold from coffee carts as well as in chains and specialty shops.8 Milk is tduk dah ko, in the spelling Move to Cambodia uses.9 More than 90% of the coffee drunk in Cambodia is imported, mostly from Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.8
Menus are priced in US dollars, but small change comes back in riel. Day-to-day trade runs at 4,000 riel to the dollar, a little under the official rate, which stood at 4,084 riel on 26 October 2026.1011 Carry small, clean notes: street vendors and tuk-tuk drivers may refuse damaged ones.12
Tipping is not part of Cambodian culture, though it is becoming more common in tourist areas and is appreciated after good service.13 Wi-Fi is available in the usual places, and most visitors buy a local SIM card with a data plan.5
Cafés start early and many finish early. Noi Café, Aline Café on Aleah Road, Smile Coffee, The Corner Cafe II and, on weekdays, The Blue Pumpkin on Street 2 Thnou all open at 06:00, and about a third of cafés close by 18:00. April and May are the hottest months, with highs that can reach 40°C; November to March is cooler and windier, and the busiest time to visit.10
