The Old Market, Psar Chas (ផ្សារចាស់), stands on Street 2 Thnou in the south of the city, between Pub Street and the Siem Reap River.12 Many businesses give their address in relation to it, which makes it a handy landmark when giving directions.1

Pub Street, a block away on Street 8, grew up in the late 1990s around the bar Angkor What?, which closed in late 2025, according to Wikivoyage.3 The cafés around it start early and finish late, from a bakery that opens at 06:00 on weekdays to a gelato bar in The Alley that serves until 22:30.

Local tip: If your temple pickup is before 07:00, Noi Café opens at 06:00 every day; The Blue Pumpkin on Street 2 Thnou opens at the same hour on weekdays only.

Coffee chains in Old Market & Pub Street

Inside Psar Chas

The market's souvenir rows sell silk, silverware, wood and stone carvings and Buddhas, while its food stalls deal in rice, dried fish, pork sausages, baguettes, soups and stuffed grilled frogs.1 Wikivoyage warns that fruit and food there often cost twice the local price, and suggests opening at about 20% of the asking price for art or cloth.3

The Blue Pumpkin, at 563 Street 2 Thnou, opens at 06:00 on weekdays and stays open until 22:00. Maison Kayser, opposite the market's main entrance, bakes baguettes, croissants, macarons and éclairs.4

Book cafés on Street 9

New Leaf Book Cafe, at 306 Street 9, opened in July 2013 and gives all its profits to local causes; in 2015 its shelves held more than 3,000 new and second-hand books, most of them donated.56

Its coffee is Cambodian, from Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri provinces, roasted by Three Corner Coffee Roasters in Phnom Penh.6 New Leaf opens daily 07:30–21:30 and has vegan dishes. Kaya Cafe is at 30–34 Street 9, and Coffee Town is on the same street.

Riverside on Pokambor Avenue

Sister Srey, at 200 Pokambor Street on the riverside, opened in 2012 to support young Khmer students balancing school and family, and gives a large share of its profits to APOPO, which clears landmines with detection rats.7 It opens 07:00–18:00 Tuesday to Sunday and serves brunch, baked goods and vegan dishes.

Madame Café is at 4 Pokambor Avenue. Across the river, the Art Centre Night Market is reached on foot by a bridge from the Old Market side and starts to open after 11:00.8 The Made in Cambodia market on Kings Road, next to the Hard Rock Cafe, has live performances at weekends, and a green path along the river starts at the same corner.83

The Alley and Sivatha Boulevard

Wikivoyage describes the restaurants of The Alley as quieter than Pub Street's, and at dusk barbecue stalls set up at the corner of Street 8 and Street 11.3 Gelato Lab, in The Alley, opens 09:00–22:30 and has vegan options and Wi-Fi.

Joe to Go, at 12 Sivatha Boulevard, runs 07:00–21:30. For an early start, Noi Café opens at 06:00 and Noi Coffee at 07:00, both daily and both closing at 19:00. Fat Panda's is on The Lane, and The Street7 Cafe at 087 Street 07.
