Vegetarian food in Siem Reap takes a little care. Fish sauce, oyster sauce and chicken powder flavor many Cambodian dishes, vegetable ones included, and English menus do not always flag them.1 Meat and fermented fish paste are common ingredients in traditional Khmer cooking as well.2

Cafés with vegan dishes cluster near the Old Market, where New Leaf Book Cafe, Sister Srey and Gelato Lab all have them, with Taphul second and Kandal Village level with Wat Bo behind it. Across the river, Wat Bo adds BioLab Café and a vegetarian restaurant in an old Khmer wooden house.2

Local tip: Learn aht chak (no meat) and tduk try (fish sauce) before ordering Khmer dishes, and ask whether chicken powder goes into the vegetables.

Where these cafés are: Old Market & Pub Street (3), Taphul & Night Market (2), Wat Bo (1), Kandal Village (1).

Words to use when ordering

Move to Cambodia gives the phrases in transliteration: khnyom aut nyam means "I don't eat", aht chak means "no meat", and fish sauce is tduk try. Oyster sauce is preng chong, and chicken powder sop knah.1

Vegans should also ask about egg (pong moan for chicken, pong thear for duck) and milk, and expect vegetarian dishes to share pans and utensils with meat.1

Coffee is the other trap: Cambodian coffee usually comes with sweetened condensed milk rather than black.3 Sugarcane juice, pressed from the stalks by a machine and served over ice, is a dairy-free alternative from street stalls.3

Around the Old Market

New Leaf Book Cafe on Street 9, which gives all its profits to local causes, opens 07:30–21:30 and has vegan dishes and Wi-Fi in a smoke-free room.4 Sister Srey, on the riverside at 200 Pokambor Street, serves vegan plates alongside brunch from Tuesday to Sunday.5

Gelato Lab in The Alley has vegan options and Wi-Fi, and it stays open until 22:30, later than any of the others.

Wat Bo and the east bank

BioLab Café at 0418 Wat Bo Street serves vegan dishes from 07:00 to 22:00. Footprint Cafes on Street 26 offers vegetarian and vegan options and keeps a large shelf of donated second-hand books, and The Muffin Man, locally owned by an Australian-trained baker, labels its vegan and gluten-free items.6

Banllé, also on Street 26, is a vegetarian restaurant in a restored Khmer wooden house that grows organic vegetables on its own farm; in 2019 Green Queen counted many of its dishes as fully plant-based.2

Peace Cafe cooks vegetarian versions of Cambodian and international dishes, with courtyard seating and a gift shop.6 Green Queen places it on River Road in Sla Kram and describes it as a Buddhist social enterprise whose staff can point out dishes without dairy or eggs, with a community garden used for yoga and meditation.2

Taphul and Kandal Village

On Taphul Road, My Little Cafe serves Khmer food, vegan dishes among it, until 21:30.6 Mocha & Krem on Street 53 has vegan brunch dishes on weekdays, 07:00–17:00, and in Kandal Village, Happy Tite Jam Cafe opens daily 10:00–17:00 with vegan brunch plates and Wi-Fi. Mocha & Krem also has air-conditioning, outdoor seats and takeaway.
