Kandal Village is a name the shopkeepers chose. After Douglas Gordon of the concept store Trunkh found Hup Guan Street in February 2014, the street's business owners voted on a name and picked Kandal, "middle village", because tuk-tuk drivers already knew it and because the area sits behind the old Phsar Kandal.1

Wikivoyage places the area north of Pub Street and south of the Old French Quarter and calls it the town's rising arts and culture precinct.2 It has fewer cafés than the neighborhoods across the river, but more with Wi-Fi than any other part of Siem Reap.

Local tip: The Little Red Fox closes on Wednesdays; that day, Ellen Coffee on Preah Sangreach Tep Vong Street opens at 06:30 and has outdoor seating.

Finding Hup Guan Street

Hup Guan Street is a small street tucked behind Samdech Tep Vong Road, known as ANZ Bank Road, and many visitors miss it by keeping to the riverside or Sivatha Boulevard.1 Phsar Kandal, the Central Market, is on Sivatha Boulevard.3

In 2015 the district had about a dozen small businesses, from cafés and an Italian trattoria to a spa and concept stores. Many closed during the pandemic, and new ones have opened since.1

Trunkh, which Gordon and Marianne Waller first opened in Phnom Penh, opened its Siem Reap branch on the street in late May 2014, and the owners promoted the new district with a paper brochure, then with social media and advertising on tuk-tuks.1

The Little Red Fox

The Little Red Fox Espresso, at 593 Hup Guan Street, is owned by Australians Adam Rodwell and David Stirling and serves everything from espresso to cold drip; its baristas train young Cambodians in coffee.4 The menu runs to bircher muesli, omelettes and homemade cakes, and a lounge called The Den was added in 2016.4

It belongs to Collective for Good, a Siem Reap network of social enterprises and ethical businesses, and its menu has included a hot ginger and lemongrass latte; its neighbors on the street include an Italian restaurant, a Southern barbecue place and a Taiwanese bao bar.5 It opens 07:00–17:00, closes on Wednesdays, has outdoor tables and allows pets. Cafe .9 is a few doors away at number 577.

Common Grounds and Central Market Street

Common Grounds, at 719–721 Street 14 behind the Central Market, is an American-style coffee shop whose profits fund humanitarian projects of People for Care & Learning; it has air-conditioning and fast internet.2

Central Market Street has the Globalhub at P3, open weekdays 07:30–17:00 with air-conditioning and outdoor seats, and The Hideout Barista and Lounge.

Early and late on the side streets

Smile Coffee opens at 06:00. On Preah Sangreach Tep Vong Street, Ellen Coffee at number 33a opens at 06:30 every day and closes at 19:00, or at 17:00 on Wednesdays and Sundays; The Flock Cafe is at number 09.

The Village Bakery and Café runs 07:00–17:00 and Waffles & Coffee 08:00–17:00, closed on Tuesdays; both allow pets. Happy Tite Jam Cafe serves vegan brunch dishes 10:00–17:00. Art Coffee stays open until 21:30 and Snow village until 22:00, and Wat Chocolate opens 10:00–19:00.
