Vancouver's Chinatown is the largest in Canada, and Main, Pender and Keefer streets are its main commercial blocks.1 It was designated a National Historic Site on 19 July 2011.1

Strathcona, east across Main Street, is the city's oldest residential neighborhood. It grew out of the settlement around Hastings Mill and was called the East End until the 1960s.2 In the urban renewal of the 1950s and 1960s about 15 blocks were cleared, including Hogan's Alley, the city's only Black community, until residents organized and stopped it.2

Local tip: Hush at 488 Gore Avenue serves only from 06:30 to noon; for an afternoon coffee in Strathcona, Prototype on East Hastings stays open until 16:00 on weekdays and 17:00 on Saturdays.
