Yaletown was a heavy industrial district of warehouses and rail yards, which the Canadian Pacific Railway developed after bridges crossed False Creek in 1889. Many of the railway's workers came from Yale, British Columbia, and gave the area its name.1 Hamilton and Mainland streets keep the two most intact rows of brick warehouses, built on rail platforms and now lofts, offices, shops and restaurants.1
Redevelopment followed Expo 86, held on neighboring industrial land.1 The old Drake Street roundhouse is now a community center and houses Engine 374, which pulled the first passenger train into Vancouver in 1887.1 In the late 1990s, technology companies of the dot-com years clustered on the same streets.1 Cafés continue west of the warehouses along Davie, Nelson, Howe and Burrard streets.
