Kitsilano lies on the southern shore of English Bay, from Burrard Street west to Alma Street and south to 16th Avenue. Its name comes from X̱ats'alanexw, the Squamish name of chief August Jack Khatsahlano.1 West 4th Avenue and West Broadway are its two shopping streets, known for shops, restaurants and organic food markets,1 and about two-thirds of its cafés are on one or the other.

Rents were low in the 1960s, and Kitsilano became one of the city's two centers of hippie culture, Gastown being the other.1 Greenpeace met at Kits Neighbourhood House in 1974 and 1975, when it ran an office on 4th Avenue at Maple Street. The 2016 census counted 43,045 residents.1

Local tip: Kitsilano Pool only opens from May to September;6 the rest of the year, Kits Beach Coffee on Cornwall Avenue still opens at 07:00 every day, steps from the beach.
