Patio weather in Vancouver is short but dependable. July and August are usually dry, with precipitation on only about one day in five, and July afternoons average 22.4 °C. November, December and January are the wettest months, at roughly 172–175 mm each at the airport, and downtown is wetter still: 1,588 mm a year against the airport’s 1,189 mm.1

Most café patios are on the downtown peninsula. Downtown has the most, followed by the West End and Yaletown, and the three together hold about three in five; south of False Creek, Kitsilano leads.

Local tip: July and August are the safe patio months: from November to January the city gets its heaviest rain, so plan seawall or Denman Street coffee for summer mornings and sit inside in winter.

How Vancouver’s patio season works

Curbside café patios here date from the pandemic. The City launched its Temporary Expedited Patio Program in June 2020 and approved 421 patios that summer; in 2021 the number rose to 692, including 128 on sidewalks and 388 in curbside parking spaces.2 In September 2021 council voted unanimously to make the program permanent, with a summer patio season from April 1 to October 31 each year and permit fees back from 2022.2

The rules loosened again in March 2022. Businesses could resubmit earlier technical drawings without hiring an architect, curbside patios could extend in front of neighboring businesses, and a café could move up to half its indoor capacity outside.3

Seawall and beach tables

On the False Creek side of Yaletown, Small Victory at 1089 Marinaside Crescent opens daily 08:00–17:00 and The Grind at 1006 Beach Avenue 07:00–18:00. In Coal Harbour, The Flying Whale at 999 Canada Place stays open until 21:00 every day, and Cafe Villaggio has outdoor seats on Coal Harbour Quay.

Kits Beach Coffee, at 1945 Cornwall Avenue near Kitsilano Beach, opens 07:00–19:00 daily. The beach faces English Bay, and its outdoor saltwater pool, run by the Park Board from May to September, is the longest swimming pool in Canada.4

Denman, Robson and Davie sidewalks

In the West End, patio cafés line Denman Street. Delany’s Coffee at 1105 Denman opens at 06:30, Milano Coffee at 849 Denman runs 07:00–19:00, and Cafe Portrait at 1120 Denman stays open until 21:00 from Friday to Sunday.

Perfecto at 1502 Robson Street opens 07:00–21:00, and Thierry, a block north of Robson at 1059 Alberni Street, has outdoor seating and serves until 22:00 most nights. In Yaletown, Faubourg Paris at 302 Davie Street and Nine Bar Coffee at 477 Davie both have tables outside; Nine Bar runs until 22:00.

Commercial Drive and the East Side

Commercial Drive’s café habit is older than the patio program. Italian newcomers settled in East Vancouver after the Second World War and the north end of the Drive became Little Italy; in 2007 the stretch between Venables Street and Broadway had 93 restaurants, 19 of them coffee bars.5 Italian Day, revived in 2010, is billed as the largest one-day cultural festival in Vancouver, and patios, music stages and vendors take over the street.5

Caffe La Tana at 635 Commercial Drive has outdoor tables and serves until 23:00 daily, and Azteca Cafe & Gelato at 1858 Commercial until 22:00, or 22:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. Moja Coffee, at 1102 Commercial, opens 07:00–17:00.
