Mount Pleasant stretches from Cambie Street to Clark Drive, and from Great Northern Way and 2nd Avenue south to 16th Avenue and Kingsway. The name dates from 1888, and the area is sometimes called Vancouver's first suburb.1 Breweries worked along a stream here from 1888 to 1912, so it became known as Brewery Creek.1

Main Street was called Westminster Avenue until 1910, when local merchants had it renamed. It climbs into the neighborhood at Terminal Avenue, and south of Broadway it is dense with restaurants and clothing shops.2 Gentrification since the early 1990s has been most visible around Main and Broadway.1

Local tip: Elysian's Ontario Street flagship roasts on site on a 1950 Probat;5 on weekdays it opens at 07:00, half an hour before Gene Coffee Bar and Bean Around The World on Main Street.
