Karlín, on flat land east of Florenc, was laid out from 1817 and named after Caroline Augusta of Bavaria, fourth wife of Emperor Francis I; it joined Prague on 1 January 1922.1 Cheap land beyond the city walls drew factories, and the electrical engineer František Křižík had a large hand in the district. The 1,111-meter Negrelli Viaduct, opened in 1850, is one of its most notable landmarks.1

The 2002 flood caused severe damage, and the recovery since has brought new businesses and residents.1 Seznam Zprávy credits the cafés and food places that opened after the floods with much of that change.2 About half the cafés here are on Sokolovská and Křižíkova, the two long streets that cross the district.

Local tip: Můj šálek kávy on Křižíkova takes reservations on weekdays only and is often busy, so come early at weekends.2
