Charles IV founded Nové Město (New Town) in 1348, just outside the walls of the Old Town to the east and south.1 Its plan grew from markets: Wenceslas Square began as the Horse Market, and Karlovo náměstí (Charles Square), about 550 by 150 meters, was widened from the cattle market.21 The district reaches from the Vltava embankment, where the National Theatre and the Dancing House stand, up to the National Museum at the top of Wenceslas Square.12

Nové Město has more cafés than any other part of Prague, and the widest mix. Coffeehouses from the early 1900s such as Café Louvre and the Imperial share its streets with čajovny (tea rooms), bubble-tea counters, a couple of all-night places and roasters’ espresso bars near Florenc. Vodičkova, Václavské náměstí and Národní have the most cafés, followed by Štěpánská and Myslíkova, which runs down toward the river.

Local tip: Café Louvre opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and its billiard hall offers weekday morning practice at a reduced price.4

Getting around Nové Město

Metro line B crosses the district underground, with stations at Karlovo náměstí, Národní třída, Můstek, Náměstí Republiky and Florenc.9 Line A runs beneath Wenceslas Square, which is about 750 meters long, from Můstek at the bottom to the National Museum.2 The square is being rebuilt in stages: the lower part was finished in 2023, and the upper part is due in summer 2027.2

Národní třída follows the line of the Old Town’s medieval moat, filled in after 1781, and marks the boundary with Staré Město; it was called Ferdinandova třída from 1870 to 1919.8 Café Louvre at No. 22, Café Nona at No. 4 and PATE at No. 10 are on the Nové Město side of the street.

Palác Lucerna, between Vodičkova and Štěpánská, was built from 1906 to about 1920 by Václav Havel, grandfather of the later president, and holds Prague’s first shopping passage.5 Its Art Nouveau Kavárna Lucerna, at Vodičkova 36, opens daily 10:00–00:00, and David Černý’s horse, a reworking of the St. Wenceslas statue, is in the passage.5

Café Imperial, at Na Poříčí 15, has served guests since 1914 under ceramic wall decorations and ceiling mosaics. Chef Zdeněk Pohlreich now runs it as a grand café with Czech cooking, open daily 07:00–23:00, with a breakfast buffet from 07:00.6
