Žižkov, east of the center, is named after the Hussite general Jan Žižka and was a town in its own right until it joined Prague in 1922.1 Residents still call it the Free Republic of Žižkov, and it is known for pubs: more than 300, said to be the most per head of any city district in Europe.1

Its cafés are small and local. Seznam Zprávy found ones that double as galleries, coworking rooms and a flower shop, and put it down to a strong neighborhood community.2 Hartigova has the most cafés of any street here, ahead of Seifertova, and about three in five close by 20:00 on weekdays.

Local tip: Café Vítkov is inside the National Memorial, but its terrace needs no ticket: use the stairs or lift at the south entrance.2
