The center outside the walls begins at Vabaduse väljak (Freedom Square), laid out on the site of a Swedish bastion in front of the Harju Gate. St. John's Church went up on its eastern side in 1862–67, and the War of Independence Victory Column was unveiled on 23 June 2009. The present square, about 110 by 75 m, was designed by Tiit Trummal, Veljo Kaasik and Andres Alver.1

The Estonia Theatre, home of the national opera, opened on 24 August 1913, was bombed on 9 March 1944 and reopened in 1947.2 Around Viru väljak and Rävala puiestee, several cafés open at 07:00 on weekdays; further south, Uus Maailm and the streets around Herne and Koidu have smaller kohvikud.

Local tip: For a 07:00 coffee on a weekday, Rävala puiestee is the place: Kohvipaus at number 2 and Wake me up 2.0 at number 6 both open then.
