The Rotermann Quarter lies between the Old Town, Viru Square and the port.1 It grew from the timber depot Christian Abraham Rotermann opened on Mere puiestee in 1829; by 1890 his family had built the largest flour mill in Tallinn here, followed by a stone elevator in 1900 and a 50 m boiler chimney in 1902.2 In 1880 the works already had Tallinn's first private telephone line, running down to the port.2

After Estonian independence, production stopped and the buildings were privatized. A fire in 2000 damaged the most valuable of them, and through the 2000s the mills were restored and new buildings went up beside them.2 North of the quarter are the ferry terminals of the Old City Harbour.

Local tip: RØST closes on Sundays; Levier, a few doors down, opens at 08:00 every day of the week.34
