Tallinn's Old Town keeps the street plan of the 13th century, and most of its buildings date from the 13th to the 16th.1 It has two halves: the Lower Town around Town Hall Square, and Toompea, a limestone hill of about 7 hectares with the castle that houses the Riigikogu, Estonia's parliament, on its southwestern corner.2

The halves kept separate administrations for centuries; their boundary was fixed by agreement in 1348, and they were not formally joined until 1878.2 Cafés follow the old split. Most are in the Lower Town, on Pikk, Viru and Müürivahe, while on Toompea they sit by the viewing platforms and the cathedral.

Local tip: Kehrwieder stays open until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday nights, later than any other Old Town café; its roastery across Saiakang closes at 19:00.4

Coffee chains in Old Town

Town Hall Square and Saiakang

The Town Hall on the south side of the square was rebuilt into its present Gothic form between 1402 and 1404, and the weathervane on its 64 m tower, Vana Toomas (Old Thomas), first went up in 1530; the original is kept in the basement.3 Kullassepa, Dunkri and Vanaturu kael lead into the square.3

Kehrwieder's chocolaterie is at Saiakang 1, the narrow passage off the square. The family business roasts its own coffee across the passage at Saiakang 2, calls itself Estonia's oldest coffee establishment, from the late 17th century, and keeps the chocolaterie open until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.4 Vana Toomas, at Raekoja plats 8, has tables on the square, and Kofeman is a few steps away at Kullassepa 4.

Pikk and Vene

Maiasmokk at Pikk 16 counts its café from 1864. It took its present look in 1913, with bronze-ornamented counters under a painted glass ceiling, but only got the name Maiasmokk in 1984; marzipan figures have been made on the premises again since 2007.5 Breakfast runs 09:00–12:00, and the Maiasmokk breakfast of fried eggs, bacon, green beans and handmade bread costs €8.90 as of 2026.6

Chocolaterie Pierre is one street over at Vene 6, in the Meistrite hoov (Masters' Courtyard), where some 40 filled guest books stand on the shelves.7 Josephine is further up at Vene 16, and Pikk has Kohvik Mademoiselle at number 29, Kleo at 37 and 5 Senses at 47.

Along the wall on Müürivahe

Müürivahe has more cafés than any other Old Town street. OA Coffee opened its first coffee shop at number 36 in spring 2021, as a café and bean shop in one where beans are ground to order.8 Lummus, at 20, is an art café that also runs events and art workshops, and stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.9

Cafe Kiosk Number 2, at 22, opens 09:00–18:00 on weekdays and 10:00–18:00 on Saturdays, and closes on Sundays.10 Dopamine is at 15, Tallinn Bubblewaffle at 17 (Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00–19:00) and Caffe Carissimi at 52, open daily 10:00–18:00.

Toompea and its slopes

The Long Leg (Pikk jalg) was the main route between the Lower Town and the hill, and Pika jala sits at Pikk jalg 16.2 On top, Fersen Baar occupies the Patkuli viewing platform, pouring its own red Fersen beer next to coffee and Estonian dishes.11 Cafe Mathilda on the Hill, at Toom-Kooli 21/1, opens Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00–16:00. On the Harjumägi side, Varblane and Harjumäe kõlakoda share Komandandi tee.

Theatre cafés and rye bread

The Estonian Youth Theatre's café, at the theatre on Lai 1 and Nunne 4, opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00, from September to mid-July.12 Rukis Kohvik ja Pagarikoda (café and bakery) at Viru 11 is one of the places Visit Estonia names for must leib, Estonian dark rye bread.13 Pagaripoisid, at Nunne 11, opens daily 09:00–18:00, with tables outside.
