Chugureti lies on the left bank of the Mtkvari, between Avlabari to the south and Didube to the north, and it holds the city's main railway station.1 Its name comes from the Turkic chughur, a pit or deep hollow; a village called Chukhuri appears in a charter of 1707, and it joined the city in 1824.2 German colonies founded in the first quarter of the 19th century did much to shape it.1

Alexanderdorf, a colony of settlers from Württemberg founded in 1818, lined both sides of the road that is now Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue. Its Lutheran church of 1820 stood on today's Marjanishvili Square until Soviet authorities had German prisoners of war demolish it in 1946–47.3 The avenue was renamed for King David the Builder in 1988 and reopened after rehabilitation on 23 November 2011.3

Local tip: Order a halva Raf at Puri Guliani on Saarbrücken Square and take it out to the patio over the river.10
