Vake takes its name from a 19th-century word for a plain or flat place, and it was incorporated into Tbilisi in January 1906.1 Intensive building began in the 1920s, and for a long time the neighborhood reached the center only along Melikishvili Street; in 1957 the lower Varaziskhevi ravine was filled in to link it with Heroes Square.1 Today it is one of the city's largest residential areas, with universities and research institutes between the apartment blocks.1

Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue is its spine: the old road to Tskneti, continuing Rustaveli and Melikishvili avenues and named after the writer.2 Tbilisi State University, founded in 1918, has its main building at number 1, the former Nobility Gymnasium built between 1899 and 1906.23 Mziuri park opens off the middle of the avenue and Vake Park off its western end.2 The streets between them hold more cafés than any other part of Tbilisi.

Local tip: Climb the Vake Park staircase early, before the heat, then have breakfast at Lui on Chavchavadze Avenue, which is open around the clock.7

Mziuri and Vake Park

Mziuri opened in 1982 in the valley of the Vere river, on an idea of the writer Nodar Dumbadze for a children's city in the middle of the capital; chaotic building in the 1990s cut the park down.4 Café Mziuri, the social café at Chavchavadze 23, is built on universal design principles, with a Braille menu, a corner for parents with babies and meat-free dishes every Monday.5 It is open 10:00–22:00 daily.

Vake Park opened in 1946 as Victory Park. A wide staircase climbs from Chavchavadze Avenue past a cascade of fountains to the Second World War memorial on the ridge, and the paths are laid with red sand.6 The park has its own cafés and restaurants and an open-air cinema, and the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium closes its southwestern end.6

Lui and the avenue

Next to Mziuri, Lui at Chavchavadze 23–23a is open 24 hours, seven days a week, and has a children's play area.7 It roasts its coffee in-house.15 Its menu lists a small cappuccino at ₾8.90, an espresso at ₾6.50 and shakshuka at ₾17.90.8

Abashidze and Paliashvili streets

Irakli Abashidze and Zakaria Paliashvili streets run parallel to each other, with a café every few doors. On Abashidze, Day Off at number 22 and Puri Guliani Express at number 37 open at 08:00 and close at 22:00. The Express is the daytime branch of the bakery-café on Saarbrücken Square, with a shorter menu and fresh bread for delivery.9 Shukura at number 49 has outdoor tables.

On Paliashvili, Coffee LAB's branch at number 24 has booth seating.7 The company roasts its own beans and calls itself Georgia's first specialty coffee roastery.14 Minimalist at number 110, a tiny third-wave bar that serves only manual brews, keeps daily hours of 09:00–22:00.10 Between the two, Pelamushi at number 60 stays open until midnight, and Pon Ponchiki at 80 and Bonny at 82 set tables on the pavement.

Getting to Vake

No metro reaches Vake. A Vake station was planned for a third metro line, but work on it never began.11 Buses and taxis cover the gap, and a bus ride costs ₾1, the same as the metro.12

Shavi Coffee Roasters has a branch further out in Bagebi, at Tskneti Highway 36a, open 08:00–19:00.13 For early starts, Lui never closes, and Early Bird on Bazaleti Street and Bu' Neba 700 on Merab Berdzenishvili Street both open at 08:00; Bu' Neba stays open until midnight from Monday to Saturday.
