Vera, or Vere, takes its name from the Vere river; the older name of the settlement was Skvireti, and the word Vere appears from the 13th century as the name of the Vere gorge.1 The caravan road to Trialeti passed through, guarded in the 18th century by a special detachment, and the land was an estate of the Gabashvili family.1 Intensive building began in the 1880s, and by 1900 houses reached the Varaziskhevi ravine on the edge of Vake.1

The 13th-century Blue Monastery still stands here, beside a church of St John the Baptist built in the early 20th century.1 In August 2026 the travel site Brooklyn Of named Vera the "Brooklyn of Tbilisi", ahead of Sololaki, Marjanishvili and Vake, for its Soviet-era blocks given over to natural wine and design studios.2

Local tip: Ask at Shavi about its public cuppings; the roastery runs them alongside its coffee classes.4
