Castle Hill and the Sikló

The Baroque royal palace was built from 1749, rebuilt under Miklós Ybl and Alajos Hauszmann until its inauguration in 1912, and badly damaged in the siege that lasted from 29 December 1944 to 13 February 1945.2 The Sikló, the funicular from Clark Ádám tér by the Chain Bridge, has run since 2 March 1870; it climbs 51 m over 95 m of track and reopened on 4 June 1986 after wartime bombing.3

Budai Rétesvár in Balta köz serves rétes (strudel) daily 08:00–20:00. On Tárnok utca, Flat White Art opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and Walzer Café on Táncsics Mihály utca opens daily 10:00–18:00.

Ruszwurm and the Auguszt family

Ruszwurm on Szentháromság utca was founded in 1827 by Ferenc Schwabl, and its Biedermeier mahogany furniture survived the sieges of 1849 and 1944–45.4 It closed on 6 August 2025, when the district government took possession of the property after a legal dispute, and its owner, Miklós Szamos, died that week.45

The Auguszt confectioners started below the hill: Elek Auguszt opened a small shop in the Tabán in 1870. From 1916 to 1942 the family ran a lavish cukrászda at Krisztina körút 3, known as the Buda Gerbeaud, which was destroyed in the siege of 1945.6

Víziváros: Fő utca and Batthyány tér

Víziváros is the triangle between Castle Hill and the Danube, from Bem József utca south to Ybl Miklós tér. It was almost destroyed in the 1686 siege that retook Buda, then rebuilt in Baroque style by German merchants and craftsmen.7 Its landmarks include the Capuchin church at Fő utca 32, St Anne's at Batthyány tér 7 and the Király Baths at Fő utca 82–86, built under Ottoman rule.7

Batthyány tér and Tárnok utca have the most cafés in the district. Steamhouse Cafe at Batthyány tér 5–6 opens at 08:00 on weekdays, Zërgë Coffeeshop at Fő utca 7 at 07:30, and Il Nostro at Batthyány utca 15 serves until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday. Corvin Kávézó on Corvin tér opens daily 09:00–22:00.

Early espresso and Sunday coffee

Below the hill, the early cafés are spread out. Sis & Bro Boutique Café on Pauler utca and Füge on Szirtes út open at 07:00, Coyote Coffee & Deli on Markovits Iván utca at 07:30, and Mókusch, a café and cake workshop at Várfok utca 30, also opens at 07:30 on weekdays.

Most cafés in the district open on Sundays. Fábri Coffee at Halász utca 2 opens at 07:30 every day, Füge stays open until 21:00 and Coffee Inn on Apor Péter utca serves from 16:00 until midnight.
