Terézváros (VI) was named in 1777 after Maria Theresa, who had visited in 1751, and became one of Budapest's ten districts when the city was created in 1873.1 Its spine is Andrássy út, decreed in 1870 and opened on 20 August 1876 to relieve the parallel Király utca and link the center with City Park.2

For coffee, the district has two moods. Along Andrássy út are the old-style coffeehouse and cukrászda (pastry shop) addresses. On Teréz körút, Nagymező utca and the streets around Nyugati station, cafés stay open into the night: Terézváros has more late-opening cafés than any other district.

Local tip: For Andrássy út before the crowds, start at Ecocafe (no. 68) at 07:00 on a weekday and walk down toward the Opera; Művész opens at 09:00.
