Ferencváros (IX) is named after Francis I, crowned king of Hungary on 4 December 1792. Its inner part, Belső-Ferencváros, has long been the wealthiest, with apartment blocks from the late 19th century and earlier, while Middle Ferencváros has been renewed block by block, its backyards turned into green space.1
Ráday utca has the most cafés in the district. A second cluster sits on Lechner Ödön fasor, beside the MÜPA arts center and the National Theatre, two of the large riverside developments built since 2000.1 Between them are the Great Market Hall and the Corvinus University campus.
Local tip: Go to the Great Market Hall early on a weekday and take your coffee on Csarnok tér afterward: Coffee Works there opens at 07:30, and Tamp & Pull on Czuczor utca at 07:00.
