Budapest’s best-known nightlife sits in inner District VII, between Rákóczi út, the Kiskörút (Small Boulevard), Király utca and the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard), an area that largely overlaps the old Jewish quarter.1 Its romkocsmák (ruin bars) grew up in abandoned buildings from the early 2000s.2 Szimpla Kert, often called the first, opened in 2002 and moved in 2004 to Kazinczy utca 14, a condemned building that once held homes and a stove factory.3
The district has argued over its nights for years. It allowed venues to operate at night by decree only in 2013, and a 2018 local referendum on restricting night opening was invalid because too few people voted.1 Among cafés, Kakas on Károly körút 23 is open 24 hours, and One More Cafe at Király utca 13 serves until 02:00 from Thursday to Saturday.
Local tip: Check Friday hours in the Jewish Quarter: Tel Aviv Cafe on Kazinczy utca closes at 15:00 on Fridays and does not open on Saturdays.
