Sitting for hours over one coffee has a long history in Budapest. Around the millennium celebrations of 1896, the city had more than 500 kávéházak (coffeehouses), though only five or six were literary ones.1 The Nyugat circle of Endre Ady, Ernő Osvát and Ignotus met at the Országház coffeehouse, and the New York became the most fashionable literary and theatrical address.1

The New York Café occupies the ground floor of the palace that opened on 23 October 1894 as the Budapest office of the New York Life Insurance Company, designed by Alajos Hauszmann with Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl.2 Renamed Hungaria in 1954, it took back its name in 1989, and the building reopened after a full renovation in 2006.2 Today it has Wi-Fi and opens daily at 07:00, closing at 00:00 from Monday to Wednesday and at 01:00 from Thursday to Sunday.

Local tip: To work at Espresso Embassy on a Saturday or a public holiday, take a seat at a communal table: laptops are not allowed elsewhere then.3
