Kala Ghoda means "black horse", after a black stone statue of King Edward VII on horseback paid for by Albert Abdullah David Sassoon. The statue went to Byculla Zoo in 1965, and in 2017 the Kala Ghoda Association put up a riderless horse, "Spirit of Kala Ghoda".1 The district curves between the docks, Regal Cinema, Flora Fountain and the Oval Maidan, around the Jehangir Art Gallery, the David Sassoon Library and the Knesseth Eliyahoo Synagogue.1

Fort's Victorian Gothic public buildings face the Oval Maidan and were inscribed by UNESCO on 30 June 2018, together with the Art Deco blocks on its western side: 94 buildings in all, from the Bombay High Court and the university's Fort campus to the flats and Eros Cinema along Back Bay.2 Most of the cafés sit within a few lanes of Rope Walk Lane, with a second group north-east toward Ballard Estate.

Local tip: Kala Ghoda Café opens at 08:00; at busy times expect to share a table, a habit that dates from its first years.34

Kala Ghoda Café and Rope Walk Lane

Kala Ghoda Café opened in January 2009. Its founder, Farhad Bomanjee, planned an 18-seat coffee shop; it now seats nearly 100 across the front café, a dining room and a wine bar at the back.3 Its first customer, a stockbroker, drank the first cup on a ledge outside, and in the early years staff asked strangers to share tables.3 By its own account it opens for dine-in at 08:00 and takes last kitchen orders around 23:20.4

About 30 to 40 customers from the first year still come, and they keep a WhatsApp group, Coffee Mates, where a morning “Coffee anyone?” starts the day.3

Within a block are Bake House Cafe on Ropewalk Lane behind Rhythm House, Sequel on Forbes Street, Zen Cafe on Chamber of Commerce Lane and Malido on Burjorji Bharucha Road.

Roasters and Irani bakeries

Boojee began in Bandra in 2019 as a 100 sq ft café and has since opened in Worli and Fort.5 Its Fort branch is at 28 Raja Bahadur Compound Road.

The older trade is bread and tea. Yazdani, an Irani bakery in the area, began as a restaurant serving Parsi dishes such as dhansak and had been baking for more than seven decades by 2021; that year a brun maska (buttered bread), two chais, ginger cookies and a square of carrot cake came to ₹100.6

Toward Ballard Estate and Perin Nariman Street

Bombay Coffee House is at 3A Sprotte Road, near the Grand Hotel in Ballard Estate, and lists its hours as 09:00 to midnight every day.7 Cafe Kohinoor and Café Choco Craze are both on Perin Nariman Street, the old Bazar Gate Street, and Creeda, a board-game café on Wallace Street, opens 12:00–22:00.

In the same district stands Esplanade Mansion, built as Watson's Hotel and described as India's oldest surviving cast-iron building.1

Getting there and when to go

Since October 2025 the Aqua Line has stopped at Hutatma Chowk, by Flora Fountain, and at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, where it meets the Central line.8 The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival takes over the district every February.1
