Khar lies between Bandra to the south and Santacruz to the north. Its name comes from the Marathi word for salty, after the salt pans once worked near the shore at Khar Danda, a fishing village counted among the oldest settlements in Mumbai.1 Khar Road station opened on 1 July 1924 and made the area a suburb in its own right; Pathare Prabhus were among its early residents, and Asha Bhosle, Gulzar and R. D. Burman have lived here.1

Linking Road, first called Dadabhai Navroji Road, was built in the 1940s to link Bandra and Juhu and is described as India's third-largest shopping district by revenue and footfall. R. D. National College stands on it.2 The cafés sit off it: on Khar West's numbered roads, in the lanes of Chuim Village and along Juhu Tara Road in Santacruz.

Local tip: Start at KC Roasters when it opens at 08:00 on Chuim Village Road, then walk east to the cafés on the numbered roads of Khar West.
